Between computers at work, smartphones, tablets, and TVs, many of us spend hours looking at screens every day. If your eyes feel tired, dry, blurry, or uncomfortable by the end of the day, you may be experiencing digital eye strain, sometimes called computer vision syndrome.
At Clear Eye Total Eye Care in Boise, ID, we regularly see patients from Boise, Eagle, Meridian, and throughout the Treasure Valley who experience eye discomfort associated with prolonged screen use. Fortunately, a few changes—and the right eye care—can often make a significant difference.
What Is Digital Eye Strain?
Digital eye strain describes a collection of symptoms that can occur after prolonged use of computers, phones, tablets, and other digital devices.
Common symptoms include:
- Tired or aching eyes
- Dry, burning, or irritated eyes
- Blurry or fluctuating vision
- Difficulty focusing
- Headaches
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Neck and shoulder discomfort
Screen use can be particularly challenging because we tend to blink less frequently while concentrating on digital devices. Reduced blinking can allow the tear film covering the eye to evaporate more quickly, contributing to dry eye symptoms.
How Can You Reduce Computer Eye Strain?
One of the easiest strategies is the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something approximately 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This gives your focusing system a short break from prolonged near work.
You can also reduce digital eye strain by adjusting your workstation. Position your monitor roughly an arm's length away, reduce glare from windows and overhead lights, and adjust screen brightness so it is comfortable relative to the room around you.
Most importantly, remember to blink. Taking occasional breaks and consciously blinking completely can be particularly helpful if your eyes become dry while working.
Could Your Prescription Be Contributing?
Sometimes screen-related discomfort isn't caused by the screen alone. Small amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or focusing difficulty can become much more noticeable after hours of computer work.
Even patients who see clearly across the room may benefit from a prescription specifically optimized for their working distance. During a comprehensive eye exam, your optometrist can evaluate your prescription, focusing ability, eye coordination, tear film, and overall eye health.
When Should You See an Eye Doctor for Digital Eye Strain?
If headaches, blurry vision, dry eyes, or eye fatigue continue despite taking regular screen breaks, it may be time to schedule an eye exam. Persistent symptoms can sometimes indicate an outdated prescription, dry eye disease, focusing problems, or another underlying eye condition.
